Heartthrob is a
sonic collaboration between Fowler+Sumner and Pablo Spaull, created
in 2008.
"The
human body is mostly composed of water. Heartthrob is a reflection
upon the
inescapable intimacy we have with this life-giving element.
At its core it represents the amplification of the internal rhythm of
our pulse and heart-rate. This is magnified by the intensity of a throb
caused through abrasion. The tempo of the work references HRR (Heart
Rate Reserve) and the ability sound has to influence and control our
physical and emotion states. The sounds that feed into the work are a
meditation on the concept of active perception: Does my heart exist if
I am not thinking about it and what sound does it make when I listen
to it? Thus the sounds feed in and out of the audible and change shape
and size frequently. Heartthrob has the potential to synchronise with
the inner tempo of the listener and affect the rhythm of the body discordantly.
The sound will travel through the air and into the water of you."
